Drive With Purpose

During our travels over the recent spring break, my family apparently diagnosed me with “a poor sense of direction”.  I mean yes, I missed a few exits and a few turns.  But with the navigation system on (we call her Vanna) and in full effect, I always knew we’d get there despite my mistakes and missteps.  I knew Vanna would “recalculate my route”.  All I had to do was know where we were going and be willing to drive on, no matter what.  She would handle the rest. The technology these days is amazing.  I don’t know if I’m allowed…

Every Problem Comes Bearing Its Own Solution

Years ago while attending church, we decided to sit on the right side instead of the left. After some time, I noticed my 3-year-old looking around. Just then, he asked, “Is this our new church?” It took me a minute to understand. After all, couldn’t he recognize all the sights and sounds that seemed so familiar to me? But then it occurred to me that for him, things looked different from where he was sitting. This simple change had provided a new prospective. Already at 3 years of age, he understood that even while sitting in the same situation, under…

Sunset Sunrise

My little girl is a survivor. She survived blanket-withdrawal. It was brutal to watch. Nonetheless, at age 5, it was time to let the blanket go. It gradually shrunk, until there was only a scrap left for her to embrace. But even at that, it was good enough for her. When it was shredded in the wash, my husband couldn't bear her pain. He lovingly sewed the shreds together. He's so sweet, but there was still more for her to endure. Eventually, her blanket went missing. I watched her search frantically for it, hoping and wishing it back to her.…

Easter is Hope’s Reminder

I still haven’t finished the book.  It was literally years ago when I started reading Judith Tebbutt’s, “A Long Walk Home: One Woman’s Story of Kidnap, Hostage, Loss – And Survival”.  I just stopped reading it one day, partly because I had assumed I knew how it would end.  It is a true story about the author being captured by Somali pirates.  She shares her ordeal and her survival.  I convinced myself that I knew all I needed to know – she is captured, she survives, and she is home, the end.  But somehow this Easter has inspired me back…

Positive Emotions Can Save Lives

Last week, it happened again.  Another young life in our local community was lost to suicide. In 2017, the results of the CDC’s Youth Risk Behavior Survey revealed that 17.2% of students had seriously considered attempting suicide in the previous year. It was noted that the percentage of students who seriously considered attempting suicide in the previous year had increased significantly from 14.5% in 2007 to 17.2% in 2017. To hear these results, particularly after the loss of another of our children, it can feel scary and overwhelming as a parent, a teacher, or anyone else responsible for the safety…

Taking A Breath For Others

By the time you read this, I will have thankfully celebrated another year of life.  But it’s funny.  A fellow Aries and dear friend of mine posted asking if she should choose celebrating her birthday just as she would like, or should she schedule a business meeting. What a great question. This is a choice so many of us make, not only on our birthday, but every day of the year.  I so empathized with her because she asked this question of her friends, explaining that she was exhausted.  She said she needed a day off.  Not only was she…

Living Well Together

Half a dozen fire fighters washing a great pumper truck - I can’t believe I didn’t take their picture! But I know if I had, I would have been intruding on a moment between them.  It was none of my business.  All I could do was smile and keep it moving.  I know the life of a fire fighter isn’t easy.  But from what I could tell, they knew very well the key ingredients to making it work.  The laughter and the apparent ease shared between them suggested to me that trust and a sense of support may have something…

Spring is Within Us All

My daughter has been saving her money lately, but this week she spontaneously bought a pansy.  Apparently, she did some research and determined that her room could provide the ideal conditions to support the plant’s growth and development as it lives out its short life.  She named her pansy Daphne, and lovingly repotted her in soil purchased precisely to her needs.  She has placed her carefully on her windowsill, with special consideration given to the time of day and the intensity of light.  She has her window open to provide an ideal temperature and is closely monitoring water levels.   And…
